A red letter day in the history of the Indian Army was on the 15th of January, 1980 when the then Chief of Army Staff, General T.N.Raina announced the involvement of the Indian Army in actively promoting school and higher education for wards of serving and retired Army personnel. Till then, wards of Armed forces personnel had difficulties in accessing good quality school and college education due to the remoteness of the locations in which the parents served, as well as problems with domicile requirements in individual states. In order to mitigate some of the difficulties faced, the Army Welfare Education Society came into being. The AWES was registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 on the 29th of April 1983. At that time, the existing Regimental schools and 4 High schools were brought under it’s ambit.
Another important milestone was crossed in 1994 when the then Chief of Army Staff, General B.C.Joshi, took the momentous decision of starting professional colleges for the wards of Army personnel. The Army Institute of Technology (AIT) at Pune was the first institute to be so set up. After this, a rapid phase of growth and expansion in the activities of the AWES followed with the setting up of several other professional institutions like the Army College of Law, Army College of Catering Technology, Army Institute of Management etc.
The Army College of Dental Sciences was set up in a small campus of 5 acres in the Cantonment area of Secunderabad in the year 2001. The first batch of 40 undergraduate dental students joined in October that year. Planning for an integrated campus with all facilities commenced almost immediately and culminated in shifting to a 20 acre spacious and well designed facility at Jawahar Nagar, Shamirpet, Ranga Reddy District, Secunderabad in May 2003. The new campus was inaugurated by General N.C.Vij, the serving Chief of Army Staff at that time.
The new Dental college campus is self contained with hostels, auditorium, main building and hospital, staff quarters and sports facilities available. A total of 1,14,087 square feet of built up area is presently available with plans for further expansion on the anvil.
The Institution has been fortunate to have a strong and supportive management to help in realising stated goals and objectives. Funding for maintenance and growth has been ensured in a planned manner since inception. The institute also boasts of availability of highly qualified and dedicated faculty, excellent infrastructure in terms of land available, buildings, equipment and facilities and materials and manpower.
A well oiled chain of command also exists which ensures smooth functioning. All students desirous of taking admission both at the under graduate and post graduate levels have to qualify in a rigorous examination. Admission is purely based on merit and rank secured in the entrance examination.
The dental training imparted to the students has come in for appreciation by inspection teams and students who have graduated from our institution have secured jobs in the Army Dental Corps, CRPF, BSF, BRO, State Government Health services etc. Several of them are also engaged in dental practice in remote locations across India serving populations who, till recently did not have access to quality dental care services. In that sense, we can be proud to have fulfilled the important objective of the AWES when the institution was first conceived, namely Quality education at affordable cost.
